Returning To The Office Vs. WFH Benefits?

Returning to the office may seem like a huge drag after getting used to the work from home life that covid-19 forced many of us into. The fact of the matter is, there are many physical and emotional benefits to being back in the office. Let’s take a closer look and go through them – from a medical professional’s point of view.

Less lower back pain.

We have witnessed this shift in so many of our patients. You may go from your bed, to your couch, then take a meeting at your desk or even your dining room table. Removing the workstation you usually have at work and opting for comfort usually leads to poor static postures, which leads to aches and pains. Going into the office leads to a proper desk, chair and computer setup. In most cases!
The extra steps. Without realizing, having to commute sets us up for more movement throughout the day. The trek into the office and the extra steps done while in the office do amount to more on average, in comparison to working and taking all meetings from home. More mobility in your knees, ankles and hips is great for your joints and is what we gain from extra movement.

Less neck pain.

This is a given. While in the office, your computer screen is most likely straight ahead from your point of view which is ideal. Working from home, that laptop on your lap while sitting at your couch causes your neck to be in flexion and leads to certain muscle groups being overactivated for longer periods of time.. which leads to pain.

Better mental health.

Yes, you have to wake up earlier than you usually would if you were WFH for the day. But, studies have shown that in person contact with people on a weekly basis rather than isolation/limited contact lead to better mental health. Social interaction is great for your brain health. It can lighten your mood, make you feel happier, and promote a sense of safety, belonging and security. Allows you to confide in others and let them confide in you.
